Academic Paper Format Guide: Expository Essays

Formatting an expository essay is simple when you remember a few basic components. When you understand what information you need to include in your essay, it becomes a matter of how to present your findings in a logical manner while following the format. This essay follows an easy format that includes an introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. But, the challenge is within each paragraph and how sentences and details are presented. The following points can help you format expository essays with ease.

  • The expository essay follows a basic format that includes the introduction paragraph, three body paragraphs and a conclusion.
  • The introduction paragraph includes the thesis statement or main idea and details that help introduce the topic. The last sentence may act as a transitional sentence into the next paragraph.
  • The body paragraphs provide supporting details but each paragraph may work to provide one supporting factor. The first sentence for each body paragraph may be a topic sentence that leads to the supporting factor or point. Each paragraph may have multiple points that act as one point of evidence for your thesis. The last sentence of each paragraph may conclude the paragraph or act as a transitional statement.
  • The conclusion restates your main points mentioned along with your thesis statement. You can provide details that will conclude your essay and bring it to a close.
  • Pay attention to any guidelines or instructions given for additional formatting details. You may have a reliable word processing program but you may be expected to make changes to your content’s appearance in relation to editing and proofreading.
  • You may be required to double-space your paper or use a certain font and point size. Consider what is best for reading purposes and try to avoid mixing font styles.
  • Set margins if necessary. You may be given a measurement to set your margin by. In many cases you can use one-inch. Justifying margins may not be necessary as it makes content appear flush on one side of the paper.
  • Consider your spacing between paragraphs. Your paragraphs should have no more than 5 sentences. Make sure punctuation is used correctly such as a period, question mark, colon, and other technicalities to help distinguish sentences and other details. Be careful of spacing when using parentheses.
  • Titles should be written correctly with proper nouns capitalized.
  • Take time to edit, proofread and revise your content carefully before submission.
