Preparing a Diagram of your Essay Ideas
Writing essays are not always easy. Some are afflicted with writer’s block, while others have problems brainstorming ideas. Whatever the case, visual cues will help with any of the obstacle. Not everybody brainstorms the same way, however, ideas seem to jump out from the page with a little forethought.
One way to address this problem and be proactive is by creating diagrams. Here are some benefits of creating diagrams that will ultimately help with your essay.
- Organization- Sometimes thoughts are fleeting. With this basis, it is important to organize your thoughts in categories. Diagrams can help with this. You can label each section as an idea, and umbrella sub-thoughts from there. Then, when constructing your essay, you will be able to easily identify what you want to include, and what is best to be left you.
- Visualization- Even if you are not sure of what you will write about, sometimes getting it out on a physical piece of paper will end up having ideas speak to you. If at the beginning you are writing without the plan, sometimes you will be able to find that by the simple act of having something looking back at you will inspire other thoughts and create a snowball effect of words.
- Inspiration- This topic may seem similar to visualization, but it takes it a step farther. The difference is coming up with related ideas that are associated with the root theme. Consider visualization as the seed of the topic, and the inspiration as the plant that grows up and out of the ground. Once you have a main idea and theme, it is beneficial to run with the inspiration so you have more material to write in your essay.
- Keeping track- by creating a diagram before you begin writing an essay, that will keep you in track during the course of writing your essay. It is a common mistake to start writing on topic and by the end of the essay end up with an entirely different thesis. The best way of preventing this is to draw a diagram and keep within the boundaries while you write your essay.
Consider a diagram as the floor plan to your essay. You wouldn’t build a house without a floor plan, why would you write an essay without one? The benefits of using a diagram before writing you essay will undoubtedly help you in the process as well as help making you a stronger writer.
