Step-By-Step Instructions on How to Create an Essay Title Page

One of the most important but often overlooked elements of a great essay is the title page. It may not seem like much but it’s the very first thing your reader will see and it can help set the right mindset. As a requirement in some classes, you should certainly meet whatever the professor seeks in a highly polished essay. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to create a great title page:

Step 1) Creating the Paper Title

The first step is to simply create an interesting paper title. A lot of students have trouble with this stage. One of the most effective ways of writing a great title is to rewrite the thesis statement as a summary of your work. A good title should never be more than a dozen words or so, including a subtitle. Place the title around a third of the page down, centered and all in caps.

Step 2) Adding Your Full Name

Next you should add your complete first and last name. There are two acceptable ways for adding: the first is placing it immediately below the title (and sub-title if you have one) and the second is adding it at the bottom of the page centered above the course information.

Step 3) Adding Course Information

On that note you should enter all of your course information centered at the bottom of the page. Always include the course name, the professor’s name, and the date of submission. Everything should be uncapped in regular font. This should be in the same font size as the rest of the paper.

Step 4) Checking the Margins

After you put in all the information you should ensure that the page margins are uniform all the way around. A standard academic essay should have 1 inch margins with normal left justification. If your professor has requested for specific size fonts or margins then you should always adhere to those specifications.

Step 5) Spell and Grammar Checks

Finally, be sure that you check for both spelling and grammar errors. It may not seem like a big deal, especially with so little text on the title page, but even the smallest error can lower your score. Again, you should get off on the right foot and show the reader that you have put much thought into the preparation. All word processing programs should have automated functions to conduct each one, but be sure to double-check.
